Old Hall

Towards the tip of the Point is Sunderland Hall, a large ‘colonial style’ house built for Robert and Elizabeth Pearson in 1683 (there is a stone inscription REP 1683 in the walls). It is the oldest building at Sunderland Point. In 1690 it was probably the home of Joshua Lawson who, with his brother Robert, began the development of port facilities.

In his autobiography, the Lancaster merchant William Stout recorded he lived here for several months while the ship he and Joshua Lawson part owned, was fitted out for its maiden voyage. The vessel, a three master of some 80 tones, was named ‘Imployment’ and set sail for North America in 1698.
